Recreational Sports is offering a park and play session in Roanoke which includes canoes, mini-safety briefing and general important canoe information.

Venture Out Stand Up Paddle Board

October 17, Thursday 3 p.m.

We are now offering park and play (equipment rental) sessions in various locations in and around Roanoke, Virginia to VT Carilion and Roanoke students. You plan your transportation, we provide the Stand Up Paddelboards (SUP). We will also provide a mini safety briefing and general important SUP information. In order to paddle in Carvins Cove, you must obtain a "SUP badge". We will give you all the training needed to obtain this badge if successful upon completion. Arrive at the Carvins Cove Boat Landing at 3pm and finish up around dusk, we'll take care of the land use fees and parking passes. We can provide 10 SUPs during one session. Snacks and refreshments are not provided.

We are now offering park and play (equipment rental) sessions in various locations in and around Roanoke, Virginia to VT Carilion and Roanoke students. You plan your transportation, we provide the bikes. We will also provide a mini safety briefing and general important biking information. Arrive at the Bennett Springs Parking lot within the Carvin’s Cove Natural Reserve at 3pm and finish up around dusk, we'll take care of the rest! Rentals for equipment is only $10, and we will cover the cost of parking and land use. We can provide 8 bikes during one session, and each individual is free to choose the trail they would like to shred. Snacks and refreshments are not provided.

Students and employees are invited to take a break and de-stress with fun and relaxing activities! Activities include free chair massages, mini-mindfulness, food demonstration, healthy (and not-so-healthy) snacks, and a chance to win Roanoke Rail Dawg hockey tickets. Join Schiffert Health Center in the café anytime in the afternoon to craft your own hot pack! Heat therapy is a great way to ease aches and pains, relax tight muscles, or warm up on a chilly night. Pair your hot pack with a soothing essential oil scent of your choosing and your warm pack is an easy way to help soothe and calm. Get ready for the VTC Fitness Challenge and stop by the Recreational Sports and Carilion Wellness area for biometric testing. They will return for WellFest (2/11) and for May Extravaganza (5/7) so you can track your fitness challenge progress biometrically! Room M114.

1-3:30 pm: Homemade Sugar Scrubs with VTC Student Health Services. Stop by anytime and select your scent, color and packaging to make to make your own sugar scrub to take home. Cafe

2-2:30 pm: Unwind Offline with Laurie Fritch, Hokie Wellness assistant director. Do you find yourself spending more time on your phone than you would like? Do you feel disconnected from friends and family even when you are with them? Come to the Unwind Offline workshop to understand the impacts of device use, learn tips to maximize the positive aspects of device use, and be guided through a mindful media practice. Room R1059

3-3:30 pm: Mini-Mindfulness Demo with Cathy Kropff, certified Koru instructor. Enjoy a guided body scan meditation and guided imagery meditation after a brief mindfulness introduction. Room R1059

Koru Virtual Retreat

Friday, May 8th @ 8:30 am – 12:30 pm

Koru Retreat is a half-day silent retreat for students and employees. The retreat is designed to be a useful experience for those who have already taken Koru classes as well as those who are brand new to mindfulness. Together in community via zoom, we'll connect to practice meditation and movement. We’ve found that folks get a lot more out of Koru if they stick with it from beginning to end, therefore we ask that folks join for the whole time if possible. So double check your calendar and then sign up through the registration link!

Come to this hands on program to learn how to identify, assess, and make referrals to support services. You will learn specific strategies to help you help your friends, family members, and possibly yourself with mental health concerns. Lunch provided.

Healthy Nutrition on a Budget

Despite rising food prices, healthy eating doesn’t have to break the bank. There are many smart strategies that can help fuel the body with nourishing foods, even on a tight budget. In this workshop, participants will learn how to make a healthy and affordable meal plan, save money at the grocery store, and decrease food waste. Participants will also receive a “Budget Bites” recipe booklet. Registration is required.

Students and employees are invited to discover mindfulness and learn what all the "mindfulness fuss" it about. During the four week course, participants will be introduced to the practice of mindfulness and learn ten stress-management skills including meditation. Participants are required to attend all four sessions and can choose to purchase the book, The Mindful Twenty Something by Holly B. Rodgers, prior to the first session or read the online version available through the VT Library. This book is appropriate for participants of all ages and can be purchased from local bookstores or Amazon.

Covers in great detail what makes up a credit score, tips to build a good score while also being responsible, how to view your credit report, how long financial notes stay on a credit report, and how to remove negative information. Even those with a high credit score or believe they know a lot about credit will walk away with new information. Open to everyone.
