Consultations

Hokie Wellness offers a number of resources to assist the Virginia Tech community in their endeavors to live healthy lives. All Virginia Tech students can receive free one-on-one consultations. We offer the following services:

BASICS

BASICS is designed to help you explore your alcohol and drug use in a supportive and non-shaming environment. Appointments take place in a private office with a Hokie Wellness staff member and provide the opportunity for students to talk with their facilitator about their substance use, habits, and patterns. It is NOT counseling, but the process can feel similar.

The service follows a structured flow of two 60-minute sessions, taking place between two and four weeks apart. Session one involves getting to know one another, general discussion about who you are, what you hope to learn from BASICS, and ends with goal setting. Session two is spent primarily going over the results of a survey that you take before starting the program. You drive the conversation and work with your provider to come up with next steps that meet your goals and values.

Topics that often get covered in BASICS sessions include:

  • Personalized blood alcohol content (BAC) information
  • Brain functioning
  • Sleep
  • Harm reduction strategies
  • Social norms and patterns

Financial Wellness Coaching

Hokie Wellness offers 45-minute financial consultations that are individualized to topics of your choice to enhance your knowledge and develop your skills to manage your financial resources effectively for a lifetime of financial wellbeing. These are great opportunities to talk through your specific financial situation – you can use this time to ask questions, gather resources, and discuss ideas with a trained financial wellness team member.

Topics to choose from for these appointments include:

  • Budgeting
  • Credit
  • Student loans
  • Other topic of focus (which can include any specific financial question that may not fit in the above categories)

Recovery 1:1 Meeting

During a Recovery 1:1 Meeting, you’ll be offered a private, supportive space to explore what recovery means to you – without judgement, pressure, or expectations. Whether you’re just starting to think about your relationship with substances or behaviors, actively in recovery, or seeking community after a return to use, this 1:1 meeting is for you. Students have the flexibility of scheduling 1:1s at a frequency that best meets their recovery needs – whether that’s through a one-time, resource exploration session, or bi-weekly/monthly check-ins for tailored support and accountability.

Facilitated by a trained Recovery Community staff member, Recovery 1:1s are conversational and student-centered. You can use this scheduled time to:

  • Talk through challenges or questions about recovery
  • Explore options for support on and off campus
  • Learn about recovery meetings, housing, or opportunities for peer connection
  • Create personalized recovery or wellness plans
  • Check-in after a slip or major transition
  • Seek support to navigate conversations with a loved one you’re concerned about
  • Just be heard – wherever you’re at

Students are not required to be abstinent, in a recovery program, or have a specific label to schedule a meeting. We welcome all students navigating substance use, behavioral addictions, or simply seeking support for a more intentional lifestyle.

You define your recovery – we're here to walk alongside you!
