Don't Cancel Class

The goal of this project is to let professors know that if they need to cancel class/would like a guest lecture, Hokie Wellness has a variety of presentations that they can choose from and a member of our team will come present. The professor does not need to be present in the class, and there are a variety of presentations that professors can choose from.

  • Party Positive Workshop
    • Everyone has a different relationship with alcohol, and that should be valued. If choosing to consume alcohol, there are many helpful harm reduction strategies you can utilize. Taught by fellow student peer educators or Hokie Wellness staff, you will learn about standard drinks, BAC factors, tolerance, bystander intervention, and more. Regardless of your relationship with alcohol, you will learn how to share information with friends and be an active bystander.
  • Rapid REVIVE! Opioid Overdose Emergency Training
    • Any person, no matter their age, income, or any other demographic, can experience an overdose or develop a substance use disorder. Knowing how to respond and possibly reverse an opioid overdose can save someone’s life and might help them access needed resources for recovery! Learn more about opioids, what to look for, and how to respond in an emergency. You will receive an emergency response kit and the opioid overdose reversal drug, Narcan (Naloxone) to take with you, free of charge.
    • Note: This option is available with one month's notice. Supplies and a sign-up/roster are needed.
  • Higher Education Seminar (Cannabis)
    • The cannabis industry and laws surrounding it are ever evolving. Explore the impacts of cannabis, alternative coping strategies, harm reduction techniques, and how to help a friend. The material presented here will allow you to feel more empowered and make the best decision for you.
  • The Body Project
    • Get on any social media platform and you’re bound to see at least one “fitfluencer” and their perception about what the “ideal” body should look like. In this session, we examine the impact of media on body image and how to fight back; after all, health is more than what someone looks like.
  • Introduction to Digital Well-Being
    • People have mixed feelings about technology and how it has impacted our society. In this session, individuals will learn how to use our devices as a tool, while minimizing the distractions.
  • The Power of Fun
    • When was the last time you did something for fun and for you? Feel like you don’t have time for fun? In this session, we will explore the benefits and elements of fun, and figure out how to have more of it.
  • Budgeting Basics
    • Do you follow a budget? Not really sure where to start? Budgeting Basics is a great introductory presentation, to help individuals understand the importance of a budget and how to create a budget that will work for them.
  • Credit: What is it and why should you care?
    • What even is credit? A lot of individuals have mixed perceptions of credit, how to build it, and what good credit really means. This presentation will take individuals through the basics of credit, including building and maintaining good credit, and debunking any credit myths.
  • Finances After Graduation
    • This workshop is specifically geared for students graduating from undergrad or grad school, who are getting ready to embark on the next step in their journey. In this session, participants will be provided with a review of financial wellness basics and will be provided the resources needed to navigate finances after college.
  • Sports Betting
    • The world of sports betting is relatively new and quickly growing. With so many different applications and advertisements, it can be very easy to get sucked in and spend more money than one ever expected.
  • Student Loans and Debt Management
    • The cost of a college education is on the rise, and many people depend on student loans to assist them when paying for college. Learn about the various loans, the repayment system, and discover a debt management system that works best for you.
  • Learn How to Quit Vaping or Smoking in 50-minutes
    • Interested in learning how to quit using nicotine products, or looking to help someone else quit? Nicotine cessation can be really hard. Learn how to support those around you and the resources that Virginia Tech has to offer to help individuals make this change in their lives.
  • Sleep Better Techniques
    • We’ve all heard that you need to get about 8 hours of sleep per night, and sometimes that just doesn't seem realistic. Learn how sleep impacts the human body, and leave with some realistic tools to help you get the best night’s sleep.
  • Exploring Emotions Through Mindful Journaling
    • In this workshop we use journaling as a tool for exploring the intersection of mindfulness and emotions. We will take some time to journal individually and engage in dialogue collectively about the “what”, “why”, and “how” of our unique emotional experiences.
  • Growth Mindset
    • What do you say to yourself when you make a mistake or experience a setback? What are your beliefs about your intelligence or abilities? In this workshop we will learn how to shift into a growth mindset by exploring concepts like receiving feedback, using supportive self-talk, and the power of effort.
  • Self-Care
    • Do I have to earn self-care? How do I know if my current coping skills are genuinely managing my stress? In this workshop, we explore these questions and more. Together we work step by step through a realistic self-care plan as we learn more about effective self-care.
