Financial Wellness Resources
There are three major credit reporting bureaus (Experian, Equifax, and Transunion) that each have a report for you. Each report has information used to determine your future credit worthiness. Information on each report is used to calculate your credit score and each credit bureau has their own scoring algorithm. While the below resource does not show you your score, it is important to view your credit report to notice and correct any errors as well as to get a general picture on how your report may look to a lender.
Directions:
- Go to Annualcreditreport.com
- Click on “Request your free credit reports”
- Click on “Request your credit reports”
- Fill out the form to completion (For address, do NOT put campus address) (Also, you do not need the last 4 digits for the zip code)
- Request your credit report from any of the 3 bureaus
- You may be asked to verify who your student loan servicer is as a pre-requisite to view your report. Many college students do not know who their servicer is. If you are denied access due to answering one of those questions incorrectly for that bureau, try pulling your report from a different bureau. Some students report that Experian may ask easier questions to view the report.
- Look for errors
- If you find information that you believe does not belong to you or is not correct, contact the business that issued the account or the credit reporting company that issued the report. More information and steps can be found here.
- Access resources that may answer any questions you have on the CFPB’s website.
Note: You can pull one free copy of your credit report from each bureau each year. You are also legally allowed to view a copy of any credit report used that resulted in a credit denial from a lender, even if you have already viewed your free report from that bureau for that year.
Keep in mind that Virginia Tech’s flex plans do not provide a fixed number of meals per week, but instead offer a balance for you to spend like a debit account. This is why it’s important to budget throughout the semester to ensure you don’t run out of flex dollars or end up with too much at the end of the Spring semester!
