Wellness Workshop Schedule

Join us for this fun, interactive, TV game-show style workshop about birth control methods such as the pill, the patch, the ring, Depo-Provera, IUD, condoms, and other forms of contraception. We'll also talk about their effectiveness, proper usage, and cost. Free condoms for those who want them. Workshop length: One hour.

In this workshop, we focus on recent research on sleep and its impact on health, and offer techniques that you can begin practicing immediately after the workshop. Workshop length: 1.25 hours.

This workshop meets the requirement for the Human Sexuality Online Classes (HD 2314). ONLY SIGN UP FOR THIS WORKSHOP IF YOU ARE IN HD2314. Workshop length: 1.5 hours.

Your skin is one of your most important organs! Learn how to care of it. In this interactive workshop you will explore everything under the sun. Topics include SPF, sun glasses, tanning, sun-burning, tanning beds, and other skin care issues. After the program we will offer Dermascan skin self-checks for those who want them. Chapstick give-aways. No matter what your skin type, you will learn a lot of information at this workshop. Workshop length: 1.25 hours

Are you curious about how to eat healthy on and off campus, how to read a food label, or how to identify serving sizes? This interactive workshop will go over common food myths, help you examine what you are currently eating, and give realistic tips and resources on how to create a better plate. Workshop length: 1.25 hours.

We all have ups and downs in life but sometimes we enter periods of distress. Come to this hands on, interactive program to learn how to identify, assess, and make referrals to support services.  You will learn specific strategies to help you help your friends, family members, and possibly yourself with mental health concerns. Workshop length: 1.25 hours.

The Body Project Workshop Series is a two-part workshop series that helps women challenge their personal body-related concerns, talk more positively about their bodies, and respond to future pressures to achieve the thin ideal.  Participants attend two, two-hour sessions. The workshop setting is welcoming, encouraging, and friendly.  Participants who have attended these workshops typically say they enjoy them and get far more out of them than they anticipated. 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  1. The Body Project Workshop Series is designed for college women who have some concerns about their bodies.  Please ask yourself this question, “Do I have concerns or dissatisfaction with my body?”  If the answer is yes, you are eligible for participation in the program.  If you do not experience any  concerns or dissatisfaction with your body, please do not sign up for this workshop.
  2. The Body Project is not a treatment for anorexia or bulimia.  Please do not enroll in these workshops if you may think there is a possibility that you may have some degree of anorexia or bulimia, OR have been diagnosed or treated for either in the past.  Instead, please contact lfritsch@vt.edu for information about services for eating disorders. 
  3. Willingness to attend both workshop sessions and complete a short assignment after each session.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS IF YOU WANT CLASS CREDIT FOR ATTENDING:

We send confirmation directly to your instructor certifying that you have met (or did not meet) the special attendance and assignment requirements of the BPWS. The Body Project Workshop Series is a unique workshop for females only.  It will be a small group setting with two, two-hour sessions.  You must meet the eligibility requirements listed above, attend BOTH session A and B, and complete all out of class assignments (homework) you WILL receive credit for attending.   If you only attend one workshop of the Body Project Workshop Series, you YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE ANY CLASS CREDIT.  If you do not agree to this, please do not sign up for this special workshop series. Basically this is an all-or-none workshop, credit-wise.  Also, you may not switch into a different class for the second session of the series. So, make sure you can attend Session A and Session B – in the same series - before you sign up.

SPECIAL CREDIT INSTRUCTIONS FOR DR. SMITH'S CLASS: 

The Body Project Workshop Series is a unique workshop for females only.  It will be a small group setting with two, two-hour sessions.  You must meet the eligibility requirements listed above, attend BOTH session A and B, and complete all out of class assignments (homework) in order to receive credit for attending all 3 workshops for the purpose of Dr. Smith’s class (it is the equivalent time commitment).   If you only attend one workshop of the Body Project Workshop Series, you YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE ANY CREDIT towards ANY of Dr. Smiths options - including the extra-credit that is normally offered for attending one workshop.  If you do not agree to this, please do not sign up for this special workshop series. Basically this is an all-or-none workshop, credit-wise.  Also, you may not switch into a different class for the second session of the series. So, make sure you can attend Session A and Session B – in the same series - before you sign up.
