Quality Sleep is Essential to our Physical and Mental Health

Sleep impacts nearly every aspect of physical, cognitive, emotional, and academic life in college. Many Hokies don't get the quality and quantity of sleep they need. Hokie Wellness can help you learn more about how things like our phones, pre-sleep routines, etc. can really impact our quality of sleep.

The Importance of Sleep

  • Sleeping is just as important as exercising and dieting. Getting the right amount of quality sleep every night is critical.
  • Lack of sleep can actually damage your memory. Sleep-deprived people score lower on tests of short-term memory than those who have had a full 8 hours of sleep.
  • Don't get behind the wheel without enough sleep! Being awake for 18 hours is equivalent to driving with a BAL of .05.

Mindfulness can help you relax, deal with stress, and calm a worried brain. Sessions are held at various times throughout the semester.

Many emotional and mental health concerns affect sleep. Vice versa, lack of sleep can also impact your mental health. If you are experiencing symptoms, contact the Cook Counseling Center for an appointment.

The National Sleep foundation is a leading sleep awareness and education organization. Sleep.org is evidence-based and even has an email newsletter you can receive for free.
